Microsorum Pteropus, commonly known as Java Fern, is a classic aquarium plant in the planted tank hobby. A fantastic choice for beginner aquarists, Java Fern has earned a reputation for being nearly bulletproof as it almost requires some effort to kill and will tolerate a wide range of aquarium conditions. Microsorum Pteropus Gold Sparkle is a newer variation that produces varying tones of green. New leaves are lighter in color and slowly darken as the plant matures, making for an interesting view in the planted aquarium. Java Fern Gold Sparkle is also epiphytic, making it versatile with placement and a great choice for adding additional greenery in sparse areas of the aquascape layout. Its rhizome can be attached to aquarium driftwood or in between cracks of stone and over time, the plant will self-attach. Like most aquarium plant species, Java Fern can be grown in low tech conditions, but the addition of CO2 injection will produce a noticeable difference in growth rate and appearance.
Microsorum Pteropus can be attached directly to driftwood, rocks, or any aquarium decoration using thread or glue. Make sure to keep the rhizomes above your substrate or the plant can begin to rot. Propagation is easy and straightforward; simply cut or pull apart rhizomes to be replanted/reattached.
